Q: Tell us a little bit of your experience working at Co-opportunity Market when you were first hired.

Before joining the Co-op, I didn’t realize how important community really is. It’s not just about selling products; it’s about creating a space for friendships where people feel heard, understood, and supported. I was getting acclimated to my environment, people, and the essence of what the store would bring. When I started at the Co-op, I was nervous and unsure what to expect, like any new experience. But over time, I’ve grown more confident in connecting with customers and making thoughtful recommendations. At the end of the day, it’s a journey of exploration through experiences, stories, and conversations.

Q. Can you share a couple of your fondest memories of working at the Co-op over the years?

My fondest memories would be seeing people I haven’t seen in years! That’s the magic of the Co-op. It’s a portal that gives me access to this beautiful, authentic, and eccentric community. My favorite thing to do there is recommend stuff to people, from skincare to what to eat and what to take when feeling unwell. I’ve had customers come back and have me write up a list of things to buy. I don’t just throw anything at people. I read into our conversations, then intuitively weave some choices for them that can better assist their needs. I often end my conversations by saying, “Keep me posted on how this makes you feel,” which they usually do. It’s wonderful to have these meaningful connections that end with positive results.

Q. What do you like most about your work at the Co-op?

What I love most about working at Co-opportunity Market are the customers. They make me feel present, connected, and aligned. Every shift brings forth a surprise. Oftentimes, I forget that I’m working since I find myself present with those I may be interacting with.

Q. What has been your biggest takeaway from working at the Co-op?

One of my most significant shifts has been how my understanding of wellness has expanded. Working at the Co-op has made me more mindful of holistic health—physical, mental, and emotional wellness. I’ve learned so much from customers’ stories and being around people who care about living authentically and staying connected to their bodies. I’m better able to read between the lines and understand what a person needs and how they feel. This is one of the most rewarding aspects of the job—understanding someone’s needs and being able to offer advice that resonates with them. It’s also allowed me to deepen my relationships with customers, turning what might have been a transactional encounter into something more meaningful.

Lastly, working at Co-op has also given me a better sense of balance. I’ve learned the importance of finding space for myself, whether it’s through art, reading, or simply being in nature. The work itself is rewarding, but it has also taught me how crucial it is to recharge and reflect on my own well-being.
