Mulled Cider

Ingredients
2 tablespoons green cardamom pods, smashed with side of a knife
2 star anise pods
4 4” cinnamon sticks (plus more for garnish)
2 tablespoons whote cloves
2 oranges – one whole, one sliced
1 lemon – cleaned and sliced
5 inch piece of ginger, peeled and smashed with the side of a knife
1 gallon unfiltered apple juice or cider
pinch of salt
whiskey, bourbon or brandy
whole nutmeg
cinnamon sticks for serving
Tips & Notes
Use a toothpick to make holes before inserting the cloves.
Directions
Toast the whole spices in a pan until fragrant.
Using a toothpick, poke holes in an orange and stud it with the toasted cloves.
Combine the spices, the studded orange, the fruit slices, the ginger, the apple juice and the pinch of salt in a large pot and bring to a boil.
Lower the heat and allow to simmer for 30 minutes – 1 hour.
Serve with a splash of alcohol, a light grating of whole nutmeg, and a fresh cinnamon stick.
