We recognize that our responsibility goes beyond the products on our shelf.
We have a long history of taking the lead on the issues that matter most to our members, from being the first grocery store on the Westside to installing a photovoltaic solar array on our store’s roof in 1999 to our Green Business certification in Santa Monica. Today, we continue to be a leader in our community when it comes to environmental responsibility in all aspects of our stores.
From our extensive bulk section to our 100% certified organic produce department, you can find evidence of our commitment to environmental stewardship, our local economy, and social responsibility throughout our stores.
Our reverse osmosis water machines save 1.4million 20 ounce plastic water bottles a year. Customers are encouraged to use our reusable glass jars to collect their bulk items, and can return them to get clean ones as many times as they like. We also use eco-friendly alternatives, by using glass bottles for our organic juices, wooden cutlery, and compostable straws.
Our efforts go beyond our stores. For every new member who joins the Co-op, we plant a tree in a region in need, 1% of our total sales from our coffee line, Co-op Coffee Co. goes to Heal the Bay, and every year we donate funds collected from a grant to a different organization focused on environmental and/or social issues.
