Saving Green By Going Green
Written by Mariangela Hill
The start of a new year allows for a reset, so we can all start fresh and have an automatic redo. This year, a “green” redo could mean finally acting on the desire to reduce single-use plastics. A fantastic way to do that, while saving money too, is by shopping our Co-op’s bulk section.
Bulk isn’t just for your favorite spices and snacks (I’m partial to walnuts, prunes, and those delicious carob energy squares with sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds). Bulk also includes liquids!
Not until recently did I realize that bulk liquids are more cost effective each day, they’re also included in our monthly Co-op discounts—Owners receive 10% off bulk goods the first Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of each month—extended to liquid bulk products too. Fabulous and luxuriously scented (and unscented) shampoos, conditioners, body wash, laundry detergent, cleaners, and liquid soaps are all available in bulk. You’ll find them along the wall between the health and beauty section and the bottled water and canned beverages by the store windows.
I recently brought in an empty bottle that I was able to refill for a lot less than buying a whole new item. I saved the single-use plastic that would have come with the purchase of another bottle and I saved money too (“green and green”)!
It’s simple: bring in a clean, dry container to the Customer Service desk at the entrance. They’ll weigh it and add a sticker. Then, after filling your container, jot down the item number of your product. Your friendly Co-opportunity Market cashier handles the rest. The weight of your container is deducted at checkout, so you only pay for the product inside.
It’s a really nice way to start off the year as we move into spring time—a small reset and refresh that feels both environmentally responsible and fiscally rewarding.
The Co-op makes it easy to make this green change and lets you save money by doing it!
