Member Spotlight: Denny Zane

Co-op Member Since: the beginning (officially 1978)

Occupation: Political Advocate / Organizer

Denny Zane has been part of the Co-op since its early roots, and it all started with a pick-up truck. Fifty years of membership, friendship, and community helped shape his life in Santa Monica politics.

How were you introduced to the Co-op?

“I was recruited by a friend who was part of the organizing crew. I remember David Thompson recruited me in 1974 to be a member. Then he discovered I had a pickup truck and asked me if I would be willing to go to the produce market in Downtown LA once or twice a week at four in the morning to buy produce. I was recruited not because I knew what a brussels sprout looked like, but because of my pickup truck.”

What kind of pickup truck did you have?

A 1959 GMC pickup with a four-speed starter, painted with gray primer.

What is a favorite memory from your time as a Co-op member?

“There was a social gathering at either a park or someone’s house – hundreds of us. There was a guy who was a percussionist named Ayton, just a wonderful guy who played his instrument, bongos and conga drums. It was a fun party. There was a sweet friendship in the air.”

It seems like you’ve made a lot of connections and friends throughout your time at the Co-op,  is that right?

“Absolutely. It was through the Co-op that I met people, from Tom Hayden and worked on his campaign, managed Santa Monica’s rent control campaign in 1979 to then be co-founder of Santa Monicans for Renters’ Rights. My network eventually led the way for me to become very active in Santa Monica political life.”

What’s in your shopping basket when you shop at the Co-op?

Wholesome blue agave nectar, an egg salad sandwich, vitamins — and brussels sprouts, when they’re in season.
