Community

Since we opened our doors in 1974, Co-opportunity has proven to be more than just a great place to shop, but also a reliable partner for a variety of community organizations and an advocate for the environment. Concern for Community is one of the seven cooperative principles, on which all cooperative organizations are based. This principle means that “while focusing on member needs, cooperatives work for the sustainable development of their communities through policies accepted by their members."  See below for more information.

School Scrip

Community Schools benefit from being apart of our scrip program. Each time someone purchases a gift card at the Membership Desk we will send 5% of that amount to the participating school of their choice. Being part of our scrip program is easy. On school letterhead, fax, email or send us a letter stating you would like to be a part of the program. Our scrip coordinator will contact you soon after to confirm your eligibility. To ensure proper credit to your school all Scrip gift cards must be purchased at the Membership desk.

Food Bank Program

Co-opportunity is pleased to collect food on behalf of Westside Food Bank as well as donate surplus goods. "Westside Food Bank is a community supported non-profit organization which collects donated surplus and salvageable food locally, as well as food purchased at wholesale, salvage and co-op prices, then distributes this emergency food to hungry people through more than 65 social service agencies." We urge you to help us with your donation, the food bank collection barrel can be found near our Membership Desk. For more information on the Westside Food Bank click here.

Cooperative Community Fund (CCF)

Co-opportunity Community Fund (CCF)

Throughout the year Co opportunity donates goods and funds to a wide variety of local non-profit organizations. Additionally, once a year, our Cooperative Community Fund (CCF) also known as “Give where you live” provides us with the opportunity to donate cash grants to deserving organizations. The CCF is an endowment fund, established by a group of cooperatives to enable community giving. The fund interest earned each year on the principal is donated by each sponsoring co-op to non-profits and cooperatives in their community.

In October of 2012, Co-opportunity awarded a $2,000 grant to the Seed Library of Los Angeles (SLOLA) for the important work they do to help secure Non-GMO seeds for future generations.

We are so pleased to have been able to donate to many amazing community organizations over the years. We thank our owners and shoppers for their continued support.  For more information or to donate to our Cooperative Community Fund please click here.
