Environmental Stewardship

We're proud to announce we were recently re-certified as a Santa Monica Green Business. While there are many other businesses in the program, we're the only grocer that's certified in Santa Monica.

We're also a winner of the 2010 grand prize Sustainable Quality Award (SQA). As part of our Ends Policies (mission/vision) we are continually working towards a net positive environmental impact.

We’re constantly trying to act in ways that decrease our environmental footprint, from taking our shopping spree drawing electronic to encouraging you to use reusable bags.

Below are some key points that we're working on in the store and further down the page we have some environmental links we found to be helpful.

What we do

  • We have a storewide buying policy to source organic & sustainable products whenever possible
  • We carry produce from small, local, organic farms, as much as possible (depends on availability):
    • FALL - 45 to 50%
    • WINTER – 5 to 10%
    • SPRING -- 30 to 35%
    • SUMMER – 75 to 80% or more!
  • We’ve improved our recycling amounts by about 40% - and it’s getting better and better!
  • We use non-toxic cleaning products & Greenseal certified supplies in our restrooms
  • We use recycled content office supplies, paper towels and toilet paper
  • We use carbon block filtered water throughout the store & to spray our produce
  • We educate our employees, members and shoppers on environmental issues
  • We donate to environmental causes and community organizations
  • We carry and promote: organic, fair trade, locally produced, and
    small business products
  • We provide reusable dishware for our staff instead of disposables
  • We print all our marketing materials on recycled paper
  • We encourage our employees to rideshare & seek alternative transport
  • And more!
